It has 8 faculties (Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Communication, Business and Management, Information Technology, Chemistry, Architecture and Fine Arts). In total there are more than 19 thousand students. The study in the field of optics is provided by the following programs: Precise Mechanics and Optics (optical design, principles and design of optical instruments, micro and nanomechanical systems, biophotonics, laser spectroscopy, applications), and Physical Engineering and Nanotechnology (applied physics with the optional optical specialization). An important part of BUT is the Central European Institute of Technology (<a href="http://vutbr.ceitec.cz/en/">CEITEC BUT</a>), through which BUT is incorporated into the <a href="https://ceitec.eu">CEITEC</a> center of excellence, consisting of four Brno universities and two institutes of the Academy of Sciences. CEITEC BUT brings together 16 top research groups.
